Wine Making: This is our second vintage working with this new 2 acre block of Grenache Noir planted and farmed by Jesus Ceja. This vineyard is located in West Sonoma, framed by Carneros and the Petaluma Wind Gap. We hand harvested on the 27th of October. The fruit was crushed with 100% whole cluster and roughly 80% whole berries to enhance the fruit and spice aromatics. After an extended cool fermentation (temps around 75 degrees for 28 days) we basket pressed and aged in neutral French oak barrels (4 years old).

Wine, Dirt & Philosophy: The Ceja Farms vineyard is one of the most unique, even unlikely locations for Grenache to be planted in the state. This allows us to take the varietal in a different direction, one that I think allows people to see the gorgeous transparency and finesse that this often misunderstood grape is capable of. The deep rocky soils of ancient river bed are perfectly suited to Grenache, while the proximity to the cooler regions of Carneros a mile to the south, and the Petaluma wind gap a mile to the west provide conditions that capture the essence of Grenache Noir in a way we rarely see. According to conventional thought, it should be just a bit too cold for Grenache to ripen, but as the long slow season draws us deeper into the Autumn it allows for extended flavor development though without much sugar concentration. The result is in beautifully complex and aromatic fruit expression with markedly lower alcohol levels. Whole cluster and semi-‐carbonic maceration really play to the strengths of this vineyard sight. Slow ripening cool growing conditions are not about extract and power, they are about tension, aromatic lift, showing layers of spice and perfume that absolutely sing in the glass. Which allows us to focus on displaying the less often seen 'feminine side' of this varietals personality.

Winemaker Tasting Notes: The 2012 follows very nicely in style from our 2011. It is a vividly aromatic, and intriguing wine. Bright garnet color and brilliant clarity. There is an abundance of bright red juicy cranberry and wild strawberry upfront that is unabashed with youthful exuberance. Delicate aromatics of Rose Petal, White Pepper and Citrus blossom give way to the tight core of mid palate tannin. The acid follows right on point keeping up with the overall brightness of this racy and delightful expression of pure Grenache.
